Two Seattle Dogs on a plate

Some time ago I wanted to elevate the classic hot dog. While browsing recipes I discovered the Seattle Dog and decided to try it. The combination of cream cheese and sweet, caramelized onions sounded unconventional, and I wondered how my family would react.

One bite and everyone was hooked. The tang of cream cheese paired with rich, browned onions and a bright squeeze of Dijon creates a balanced, memorable bite. These are now a regular at our summer grills.

How To Make Seattle Dogs

Begin by thinly slicing one large yellow onion. A sweet white onion can be used, but I prefer yellow for its flavor. Choose the onion you like best.

Thinly slice yellow onion

In a large skillet, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions turn a deep golden brown and their natural sugars caramelize. This can take 15–20 minutes depending on heat and pan.

While the onions caramelize, prepare the buns. Spread the remaining butter on cut sides of the hot dog buns. Using a hot grill or skillet, toast the buns butter-side down until they are golden and slightly crisp. A quality bun enhances the final result.

Choose a good quality all-beef hot dog for the best flavor and texture.

Grilling and Preparing Hot Dogs

Using a sharp knife, make shallow crisscross cuts along the top and bottom of each hot dog. This creates a decorative “diamond” effect as the cuts open during cooking and helps the hot dog brown evenly.

Grill the hot dogs over medium heat for 5–10 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are nicely browned.

To assemble: spread softened cream cheese on both the top and bottom of each toasted bun. Place a generous scoop of the caramelized onions on the bottom bun, add the grilled hot dog, and finish with a ribbon of Dijon mustard.

Serve immediately and enjoy. The contrast of creamy, sweet, savory, and tangy flavors is what makes the Seattle Dog stand out.
