SAN FRANCISCO, CA
100% gluten-free bakery and cafe; very casual
We had heard about Mariposa Baking Company for years and seen photos of their tempting baked goods, so we were excited to finally visit. It did not disappoint. The moment you enter, you notice the warm aroma of fresh bread and pastries. Then you encounter a display piled high with more breads and treats than you might expect—everything looking inviting and well crafted.
We visited on our way back to the San Francisco airport before a long day of travel, so we sampled several items and bought even more to take along. Their breads rank among the best gluten-free loaves we’ve tried: crusty where it should be, tender inside, and full of flavor. The pastries and sweets were equally impressive, with careful baking and satisfying textures that belie the absence of gluten.
What we tasted included avocado toast, a personal pizza, vegetable quiche, a turkey sandwich, a chocolate-frosted donut, chocolate chip cookies, focaccia, graham crackers, and a cinnamon roll. Each item had its own strengths: the avocado toast felt fresh and balanced, the personal pizza had good crust structure and melty toppings, and the quiche was savory and well-seasoned. Sweets like the donut and cookies were rich and indulgent without being overly sweet, and the cinnamon roll offered a classic, comforting spice swirl.
The shop’s atmosphere is casual and welcoming, making it easy to grab a quick bite or pick up items to-go. Service was friendly and efficient, helpful when we asked about ingredients and packaging for travel. For people seeking reliably gluten-free bakery options—whether due to celiac disease, sensitivity, or preference—Mariposa Baking Company provides a wide selection that doesn’t sacrifice taste or quality.
